Millefiori is a glasswork technique, primarily performed on the island of Muran, which produces distinctive, decorative patterns on glassware and beads. Millefiori is often associated with Venetian glassware. The Murrine technique begins with the layering of coloured liquid glass, which is then stretched into long rods called canes. Then the millefiori beads are created by slicing the glass canes while heating and stretching them into various shapes. The manufacture of these mosaic beads can be traced to Ancient Roman, Phoenician and Alexandrian times. Canes, probably made in Italy, have been found as far away as 8th century archaeological sites in Ireland. There are several important Venetian glass companies which began glass production in the 13th century in Europe and are still in operation today.  This lovely jewelry set contains these beautiful millefiori beads in square and button shapes, interspersed with earth tone natural beads, corrugated gold plated beads and smoky topaz china sea crystals.
